If you've been paying attention to the Nirvana conversation lately, you've probably noticed a familiar name popping up again and again:

Pat Smear.

Smear was standing alongside Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic as Nirvana received the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards Video Vanguard Award Sunday night. The three surviving musicians accepted the honor together, once again putting Smear directly in the spotlight as part of Nirvana's ongoing legacy.

And, predictably, the internet started arguing.

Some Nirvana fans believe Smear absolutely belongs there. Others question why he continues to be included in Nirvana reunions and tributes when he wasn't part of the band's original lineup and never played on a Nirvana studio album.

So... what's the real story?

Pat Smear Wasn't an Original Member — But Kurt Cobain Wanted Him There

Here's where things get interesting.

Nirvana was formed around Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, with Dave Grohl joining the band in 1990 and becoming the drummer most fans associate with Nirvana's classic lineup.

Smear came along much later.

In 1993, as Nirvana prepared to tour behind In Utero, the band decided it needed another guitarist. Cobain personally pushed for Smear, the legendary guitarist from the Los Angeles punk band The Germs.

In a 1993 interview, Cobain explained that the band had been looking for a second guitarist for some time before he essentially had the realization: Why don't we get Pat Smear?

Smear joined Nirvana for the In Utero touring era, making his first appearance with the band in September 1993.

That means he was there during the final chapter of Nirvana's existence.

And that's an important distinction.

So Was He Actually a Member of Nirvana?

This is where the debate gets a little messy.

Smear was originally brought in as a touring second guitarist, rather than as a full-fledged member of the band's creative core.

Cobain himself acknowledged that the situation wasn't initially "official." In a December 1993 interview, Kurt described Smear as someone the band had decided to try out after wanting another guitarist.

Smear never got the opportunity to become part of a new Nirvana studio album or participate in the band's songwriting process in the way Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl had.

Nirvana ended in 1994 following Cobain's death.

And that's the ammunition for fans who say Smear shouldn't be presented as an equal member of Nirvana.

But there's another side to that argument.

Kurt Cobain Was Pretty Clear About Pat Smear

Just months before Cobain's death, he was asked about having Smear in the touring lineup.

His response was hardly dismissive.

Cobain said Smear had "worked out great from day one." He also described Smear as one of his closest friends and explained that having another guitarist onstage allowed him to concentrate more on the audience and the overall performance.

In fact, Cobain said having Smear onstage had improved Nirvana's live show.

That's pretty significant.

Whatever label you want to put on Smear's official status, Kurt Cobain wanted him there.

And Smear wasn't simply some musician hired to fill a hole for a couple of shows. He became part of Nirvana's final touring lineup during one of the most important periods in the band's history.

Why Does Pat Keep Showing Up at Nirvana Tributes?

Because this isn't new.

After Nirvana's induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, Grohl, Novoselic and Smear performed Nirvana songs with a rotating group of vocalists including Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, St. Vincent and Lorde.

Then, in 2025, the trio reunited again for the FireAid benefit concert, performing Nirvana songs with St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and Violet Grohl taking turns handling the vocals.

And now, in 2026, Grohl, Novoselic and Smear are once again appearing together publicly as the surviving musicians associated with Nirvana.

So if you're wondering why Pat Smear keeps appearing in these moments, the answer is simple:

He was there at the end — and Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have continued to include him in Nirvana's occasional tributes.

But Why Do Some Fans Have a Problem With It?

The criticism isn't necessarily about Smear himself.

It's about how Nirvana's history is being presented.

For many fans, Nirvana means three people:

Kurt Cobain.

Krist Novoselic.

Dave Grohl.

That's the lineup that created Nevermind, In Utero and the recordings that changed rock music.

Smear didn't play on those studio albums.

He wasn't part of the songwriting team responsible for Nirvana's catalog.

He joined during the band's final touring period.

So some fans believe there is a difference between saying:

"Pat Smear was Nirvana's guitarist during their final touring era."

and saying:

"Pat Smear was one of the members of Nirvana."

If you define Nirvana by the band's classic recording lineup, you're talking about Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl.

If you define Nirvana's history by the people who were part of the band's final live incarnation, Pat Smear has a legitimate place in that story.

And there is an important fact that shouldn't get lost in the argument:

Kurt Cobain chose Pat Smear.

He wanted him onstage.

Whether you personally consider him a full member of Nirvana or the band's final touring guitarist is ultimately a matter of how you define the band's history.

But saying Pat Smear has no place in a Nirvana tribute?
