There are area codes.

And then there’s 813.

On August 13, Tampa gets to celebrate one of those rare numbers that became much more than a way to dial a phone. 813 Day has become an unofficial holiday for the Tampa/Hillsborough County crowd—a chance to celebrate the food, music, neighborhoods, weirdness, history and independent spirit that make this part of Florida unlike anywhere else.

And yes, we realize there are now plenty of people walking around with a 656 number.

Before It Was a Tampa Thing, It Was Just a Phone Number

When area codes were introduced in Florida, the entire state originally shared 305.

Then came 1953.

That’s when 813 was created as Florida’s second area code, originally covering a massive chunk of the state’s west coast—from the Tampa Bay area south through places that today have completely different area codes. At one point, 813 territory stretched as far south as Collier County and included places like Sarasota, Fort Myers and Lakeland.

As Florida exploded in population, 813 kept getting carved down.

The 941 area code took a big chunk of the territory in the 1990s. The 727 eventually separated Pinellas County from the traditional 813 footprint. Today, 813 primarily covers Hillsborough County, along with portions of Pasco County and the City of Oldsmar. And because Tampa eventually needed more phone numbers, 656 was added as an overlay.

But here's the important part:

They can add another area code. They can't replace the 813.

The number had already become part of Tampa's identity.

The 813 Has Always Had a Little More Edge

There's a serious music history here.

The Tampa area became internationally known as a breeding ground for heavy music, particularly the death-metal scene that exploded in the 1980s and '90s. Bands including Morbid Angel, Deicide and Obituary helped establish Tampa as one of the world's most important metal cities, while Cannibal Corpse relocated to Tampa and became another major part of the scene.

And behind a lot of that history was Morrisound Recording, the Tampa studio that became synonymous with the Florida metal sound and hosted recordings from some of the biggest names in extreme metal.

In other words, while some cities were trying to become the next Seattle or Los Angeles, Tampa was busy inventing its own extremely loud, extremely sweaty thing.

That's pretty 813.

The Places That Made the Sound

If you're talking Tampa rock history, you can't just talk about bands. You have to talk about the rooms.

Crowbar in Ybor City WAS one of the places that kept that small-room, live-music tradition alive. Punk, metal, alternative, indie, electronic and plenty of things that don't fit neatly into a genre have found a home there.

And then there's The Ritz Ybor, another Ybor landmark that has spent years putting touring acts in front of Tampa crowds.

The Orpheum has its own chapter in the story. The venue originally operated in historic Ybor City before moving to North Tampa, and after more than two decades it continues booking national and local artists.

And for the old-school metal crowd, there's Crowbar and The Brass Mug, which has been a Tampa metal and punk institution for decades. The Brass Mug describes itself as Tampa Bay's “Music Core” and has hosted everything from international metal acts to local album-release shows.

#RIPRockitClub. The tradition that was on Dale Mabry was a staple for the best up and coming national bands to the BEST in local Rock for decades until it closed it's doors 9/11/1993.

These places matter because Tampa's music culture was never just about seeing a superstar in an arena.

It was about standing three feet from a band you've never heard of and discovering your next favorite band before anybody else knew who the hell they were.

Before Streaming, You Had to Go Digging

Remember when finding new music required leaving the house?

Crazy concept.

Tampa has a pretty great history of record stores that served as unofficial headquarters for music fans.

Today, Mojo Books & Records continues that tradition near USF. Mojo opened in 2007 and has grown into a Tampa institution combining books, vinyl, CDs, cassettes and coffee. Its music selection covers everything from classic rock and metal to punk, alternative, hip-hop and local releases.

Then there's Microgroove in Seminole Heights.

Microgroove opened in 2011 and operates as a small, independent, genre-less record store. It's also home base for New Granada Records and has become part of Tampa's modern independent music community.

For longtime Tampa music fans, those record bins are more than shopping.

They're archaeology.

You never know what you're going to find.

And that's exactly the point.

Ybor City: Where Tampa's Weirdness Became an Asset

If Tampa had a neighborhood that could be described as the physical embodiment of an 813 attitude, Ybor City would have a pretty strong case.

Cigars. Immigrant history. Bars. Clubs. Restaurants. Music. Tattoos. Nightlife. Historic buildings. People who probably shouldn't be awake at 3 a.m. but somehow are.

It's one of the places where Tampa's past and present collide every night.

And that's part of what makes the 813 interesting.

The culture isn't polished into one perfect package.

It's a little Cuban, a little Southern, a little Caribbean, a little punk rock, a little metal, a little pirate and a whole lot of Tampa.

So... What Should You Actually Do on 813 Day?

Here's the good news: you don't have to spend a fortune to celebrate.

For 813 Day 2026, Tampa-area businesses have rolled out more than 100 deals, discounts and freebies tied to the August 13 celebration.

🍕 Eat Something With an 8.13 Price Tag

One of the great 813 Day traditions is turning the number into a menu price.

And this year is no different.

For example, The Cake Girl in Carrollwood is offering a buy-one-get-one-style cupcake deal: purchase a dozen mini cupcakes and get another half-dozen free. And if you get there early enough, the first eight customers receive a free six-pack of mini cupcakes.

That's the kind of math we can get behind.

🏙️ Head to Hyde Park Village

Hyde Park Village is going big for 813 Day, with more than 40 participating businesses offering special deals and promotions throughout the day. There will also be live music and other surprises.

It's a good excuse to walk around, shop local and pretend you're not going to stop for food approximately every 45 minutes.

🕯️ Make Your House Smell Better

At The Candle Pour in Hyde Park Village, you can get $8.13 off three-wick candles on August 13, both in-store and online.

Because apparently even your living room needs to celebrate the 813.

🍺 Go Where the Music Is

If your idea of celebrating Tampa involves a loud guitar amp, a cold drink and a room full of people who know the words, you've got plenty of options.

Crowbar remains a great Ybor stop for live music.

Red Star Live Tampa Bar & Grill in the Brandon area brings a rock-and-blues atmosphere together with food, drinks and live entertainment.

And if you're looking for a record-store-to-rock-bar kind of day, you could start at Microgroove or Mojo Books & Records and see where the day takes you.
