The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-3.

Baker Mayfield, the quarterback the franchise just committed $165 million to, left Sunday's 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings with a dislocated right thumb on his throwing hand.

And now Tampa Bay heads into October with more questions than answers.

So… are the Buccaneers in total disarray?

Not quite.

But they are absolutely at a crossroads.

The Bucs lost another game at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, and this one felt especially frustrating because Tampa Bay was right there. The Vikings weren't exactly lighting up the scoreboard. Minnesota finished with just 230 total yards, while Tampa Bay actually produced 243.

This wasn't a game where the Bucs were completely overwhelmed.

It was a game where they failed to make enough winning plays.

And that's a very different problem.

The Baker Mayfield Problem

Let's start with the biggest story.

Mayfield was injured late in the fourth quarter while trying to make a desperation throw on fourth-and-13. His right hand hit Minnesota linebacker Blake Cashman as he released the pass, and Mayfield immediately went down holding his hand.

Head coach Todd Bowles said after the game that Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb. X-rays did not show a fracture, but Mayfield is scheduled for an MRI Monday, which should provide a better indication of the injury and his availability going forward.

And that's where everything changes.

Because whatever you thought about Baker's first three games, there is no denying this:

Mayfield finished Sunday 17-of-34 for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception before leaving the game. Rookie Jalon Daniels took over for the final possession.

Now Tampa Bay has to wait for the MRI.

And while we're waiting, the questions are obvious.

Can Baker play?

If he can't, how long is he out?

And perhaps most importantly—what does this offense look like without its leader?

But Let's Not Put Everything on Baker

Here's where things get interesting.

The Bucs' problems on Sunday weren't limited to quarterback play.

The offense repeatedly made life harder on itself.

Penalties erased big plays and promising drives. At one point, Tampa Bay had a huge touchdown connection wiped away by a holding penalty. Other penalties took away significant gains and forced the offense into difficult situations.

That's not a Baker Mayfield problem. That's a Buccaneers problem. And it has to be fixed.

You can't continually put yourself behind the sticks in the NFL and expect your quarterback to bail you out.

Especially when you're facing a defense like Minnesota's.

There Were Some Signs of Life

And this is why I don't think it's time to declare the season over.

The Bucs' defense kept them in this football game.

Tampa Bay trailed 17-13 entering the fourth quarter, then pulled within one on Chase McLaughlin's 54-yard field goal.

Suddenly, it was a football game.

One possession could have changed everything.

The Vikings eventually extended their lead with a 56-yard field goal, and Minnesota added another field goal late to close it out.

But here's the important part:

The Bucs were still in position to win the game late.

That's something.

It's certainly not enough.

But it's something.

The defense held an undefeated Minnesota team to 230 total yards. Kyler Murray threw for only 168 yards.

The Bucs didn't get blown out.

They simply couldn't finish.

And that's been the frustrating theme of this young season.

The Offense Has to Find an Identity

This is probably the biggest football question facing Tampa Bay right now.

What exactly is this offense supposed to be?

The Bucs have weapons.

They have young talent.

They have veteran leadership.

But the operation hasn't consistently looked cohesive.

The timing between Mayfield and his receivers hasn't always been there. The running game struggled to consistently create explosive plays. And too many drives have ended without touchdowns.

Against Minnesota, Tampa Bay's longest touchdown play came from an unexpected source—rookie tight end Ted Hurst III, who hauled in a 40-yard touchdown for his first NFL score.

That's a great moment for Hurst.

But Tampa Bay needs more than occasional flashes.

It needs consistency.

And Now Comes the Biggest Test

The Bucs don't have the luxury of sitting around feeling sorry for themselves.

Green Bay comes to Raymond James Stadium next Sunday.

And depending on the results of Monday's MRI, Tampa Bay could be preparing for that game with its starting quarterback—or preparing to hand the offense to Jalon Daniels.

That's a massive difference.

But regardless of who is behind center, the message should be the same:

Stop making football harder than it has to be.

Protect the football.

Clean up the penalties.

Finish drives.

Make the routine plays.

And give your defense a chance to win games.

So… Is Tampa Bay in Total Disarray?

No.

But they're close enough to the edge that pretending everything is fine would be just as ridiculous.

The Buccaneers are 0-3 for the first time since 2014. That 2014 team finished 2-14 and eventually selected Jameis Winston with the first overall pick. Obviously, nobody in Tampa wants to hear comparisons to that season.

But this isn't 2014. This is a team that came into the season with expectations.

A team that believed it had the pieces to compete.

A team that just handed its quarterback a massive contract extension.

And now that quarterback may be injured.

That's serious.

But serious doesn't mean hopeless.

The Bucs aren't 0-3 because they're incapable of playing football.

They're 0-3 because they haven't played complementary, consistent football for four quarters.

And Sunday against Minnesota was another example.

There were opportunities.

There were flashes.

There was fight.

There just weren't enough winning plays.

Now comes the hard part.

The Bucs have to figure out who they are—and they have to do it quickly.

Because October is here.

And at 0-3, the margin for error is getting very, very small.

One thing we know for sure:

The Buccaneers aren't going to fix everything overnight.

But they don't have to.

They just have to start fixing something.

Then something else.

And then something else.

And if Baker Mayfield's thumb keeps him out, that process gets a whole lot more complicated.

So no, I don't think this team is in total disarray.

But the alarm clock is definitely ringing.
