Do You Need Personal Space On Vacation?

If you go on vacation with your spouse, family, whatever. Do you find yourself needing your own personal space? I mean, we love our families and we do our best to keep them entertained. But sometimes you need a minute to be you again.

My wife Amy and I go to Vegas a LOT. We bring our daughter on some trips. So when it's just us, we love the same things. Food, fun, concerts, you name it. But when family comes into the equation it's not about us anymore. But you still long to do the same fun things you would do even when your kid isn't there.

We split our time. If we have something we would like to do like play table games, or whatnot, we take a little alone time while one of us does something fun with our daughter. Then we get together have family fun, and then the other adult gets to do what they want for a bit, then back to family time. Does this work for everyone? No, but it works for us and gives us time to recharge our batteries a bit.

There was a survey of 2,000 people that found people want an average of two hours daily alone time on trips. Despite 82% looking forward to vacationing with family and 60% with friends, nearly half said sharing space increases argument likelihood.

This is what happens to us. We all are sitting in a room, trying to figure out our day, and nobody moves and wastes our vacation time. So we get in a fight. So time away to be "you" is a good thing for us.

"But what could you every get in a fight about on a vacation?" is what you're thinking. It's always the same. Do you want to go to the pool, what do you want to eat, is your stomach upset? All of the things.

But if you're lucky enough to take a vacation, just remember the people with you. They need their space to. So instead of trying to do all the things you want, maybe talk to the fam and see what they would want to do. No need to fight. It's a shared experience that could be a lifetime memory. Do you want your family to remember fun or fights?
