A Study Found We Might Be Able to Breathe Through Our Butt

This is the type of headline you can't ignore: A new study in Japan found humans might be able to breathe through their BUTT. And yes, this is for real.

Certain types of fish can absorb oxygen through their intestines to stay alive in emergencies. So scientists wanted to see if mammals could do it too. And the answer is yes, blood vessels in our rectum appear to work the same way.

Basically, they gave rats oxygen-rich enemas to see if their butts absorbed it. And their blood-oxygen levels DID go up. It doesn't sound like they've tried it on humans yet, but they think it'll work the same way. They say it could lead to new emergency treatments when people can't get enough oxygen the normal way.
