According to experts, human blood tastes like salted caramel to mosquitoes.
U.S. researchers say they identified the individual neurons in a mosquito that sense our blood’s flavor, which to the insects is, “distinctive and delectable”—both salty and sweet.
Female mosquitoes specifically were found to be able to detect a combination of at least four different substances in blood—including one that is “incredibly exciting and rewarding” for the mosquito but tastes like nothing to humans.
The finding could lead to the development drugs that could mask our blood’s flavor to the mosquitoes and stop us from being bitten.
