As I wandered through the lawn and garden section of my local big-box store over the weekend, I saw something that froze me somewhere between disbelief and nausea.
As evidenced by the picture, someone had almost certainly been bleeding or crapping on the seat of a new riding mower.
I had so many questions...
Who would bleed or crap on the seat of a new riding mower....IN THE STORE?
Did they know they were doing it?
How much does the employee who has to clean it make an hour?
I ALMOST let it get me down.
True, there are people walking among us who do terrible things with no regard for the rest of us. They trash public restrooms. They pull out in front of us. They tailgate us. They fly around school buses while the caution sign is flashing. They pitch their garbage out the window of their cars.
They kill young women and men. They break our hearts.
But on this day, marking one year since the Pulse shootings, I am reminded of a great man and his calming words.
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." - Fred Rogers
We will get through this. There are far too many good people walking among us....people who are helping.
