My girlfriend and I went to cheer on a buddy at Jumbolair airport (close to Ocala) over the weekend. There was a 1/2 mile top speed event that featured everything from Lamborghinis with turbocharged V-12s to Volvos with American V-8 engines.
I've been a fan of this type of racing for years, having raced a turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle and a late-model Corvette with nitrous.
While this particular event didn't feature any bikes, the stunning cars made up for their absence. Several cars eclipsed the 200 mph mark. It was truly remarkable to watch.
For those who are into such things, my 2007 Suzuki Hayabusa was modified with a GT35R turbo, secondary injectors, boost-referenced alcohol injection and other horsepower adders. That bike made 442 hp.
The Corvette I raced belonged to my cousin. It's a 2005 (C6) coupe with several engine enhancements and nitrous oxide injection.
Please don't get the impression that this is a game you can't play. As long as your car is safe and you wear a helmet (other safety precautions may apply), you can fly down that same strip, wide open, for a full half mile.
How fast can you go?
