Voter Advocate: Early Voting Is Safest Way To Cast A Ballot In Person

Early voting is on in some Florida counties and by Saturday across the state.

Voting advocates who have been promoting vote-by-mail say this is the best alternative to that.

"The crowd is going to be dispursed over a longer period of time. You can actually, hopefully if work allows for people they can find the time of day where there's going to be the least amount of people in line, or likely no line."

Brad Ashwell, Florida Director of the non-profit/non-partisan group All Voting is Local, says early voting is safer than casting your ballot on Election Day with regards to coronavirus concerns.

"If voters are going to vote in person, early voting is really their best bet to avoid being in a situation with a crowd of people where they might be vulnerable to health concerns."

He's hoping to see an increase in the amount of time you can cast a ballot in the weeks leading up to the November election.

"We want supervisors to offer the maximum allowable hours and days and we'd love for the governor to listen to supervisors and expand the amount of time their allowed for early voting."

For now, Saturday August 8 is the latest date for early voting to start, based on state elections law and several counties around the state begin their early voting then.
