Tampa Gets New (Unknown) Area Code in 2021...

TAMPA-- Area Code 813 gets a twin sometime in 2021, but we won't know the new code until it's assigned by the national numbering plan.

The state Public Service Commission approved the move Tuesday. Officials say 813 was due to run out of numbers in 2022.

It'll be an overlay code, meaning it'll be assigned to new phones and existing numbers won't have to change.

Eventually, Residents of Hillsborough County, Wesley Chapel, Oldsmar and Zephyrhills will need to enter 10 digits to make a local call.

The PSC held public hearings in Tampa but heard no comments about the move. Later, one person wrote in to support the change.

The 813 area code originally covered an area from Hudson to Naples and beyond, to Lake Okeechobee. Increasing demand over the years split those regions into area codes 941, 239, 727, and 863.
