A Florida Police Department Warns Against A Social Security Scam By Phone

The Jupiter Police Department put out a warning about a Social Security scam that's making the rounds.

Police say a resident called them to complain that someone left a voicemail stating she had criminal activity on her Social Security number. They say one of the most common scams is the caller saying your Social Security number was linked to a crime involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally, then telling you your Social Security number is blocked but for some money, it can be reactivated. The caller will ask to confirm your Social Security number.

Other common scams include a caller saying your Social Security number was used by someone else to apply for credit cards and you could lose your benefits or your bank account is about to be seized.

Police warn that your caller ID might even show the Social Security Administration's real phone number, but scammers are able to fake that.

They advise you to never give out your Social Security number and contact the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213, as well as police if you get calls like these.
