Phony Landscapers Target Elderly Kendall Couple

An elderly Kendall couple thought the man and woman duo who knocked on their door on May 29th were there on behalf of their Camino Circle Condominium Home Owners Association.

They had been told crews would be in the area preparing for hurricane season, but these crafty crooks weren't with the HOA.

Miami-Dade Police Det. Chris Thomas says while the woman lured the 88 and 82-year-olds outside, the man searched the house, grabbed $30,000 i n jewelry and the pair fled.

The elderly couple wasn't able to get a look at the vehicle the distraction scammers fled in, but they describe the man as 40 to 60-years-old. He stands about 5'4" and weighs about 160 pounds. He has low cut, short black hair and was wearing a khaki shirt and navy pants. The woman is also 40-60-years-old. She's about 5'2" and 180 pounds. She had short, black hair and was wearing a white, V-neck tee short and colored pants.

Kendall distraction thieves

So far no one else in the area has reported similar distraction crimes.

It's believed the victims were targeted because they're older.

In order to avoid becoming a victim, Det. Thomas recommends using a peep hole before opening the door. If you don't have one, you could get a glimpse of the person on the other side of the door by looking out a nearby window. He says verify who he or she is by looking for a branded uniform and/or a marked vehicle. Then ask for identification.

He says if you don't feel safe, don't open the door, call your HOA for whom and when they're sending someone.
