Chaz Stevens of Boca Raton wants to put a 300-pound statute of a 6-foot high pink penis on display at a public park on the corner of Las Olas and A1A in Ft. Lauderdale.
Stevens is a First Amendment rights activist and argues that the statue is a religious display, inspired by the Japanese festival Shinto Kanamara Matsuri. He says it's no different from a Christmas tree or menorah, and also believes the phallic symbol wouldn't be obscene because it would be covered by an 8-foot-tall fence and out of plain sight.
Stevens has asked Ft. Lauderdale and eight other cities for permission to get this up, so far he's only gotten a hard no from Deerfield Beach.
