Today's brats don't remember getting mimeographed homework assignments (peepaw called 'em "dittos"), the ones with the purple ink that you usually couldn't read.  But they smelled like HEAVEN. 

55 years ago - In 1963, the classic movie "The Great Escape", starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Charles Bronson, was released. 

49 years ago - In 1969, The Beatles did the photo shoot for the cover of their "Abbey Road" album.  Paul McCartney just had his daughter film him crossing it again last month

44 years ago - In 1974, President Nixon announced he would resign following new damaging revelations in the Watergate scandal. 

32 years ago - In 1986, crack-head David Crosby was released from prison after serving eight months for drug and weapons possession. 

32 years ago - In 1986, Stephen King's "Stand By Me" was released.  It starred River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and "Star Trek:  The Next Generation's" Wil Wheaton

32 years ago - In 1986, Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It" was released. 

26 years ago - In 1992, Metallica singer James Hetfield was badly burned by a pyro explosion at a Montreal concert.  

At the same show, Axl Rose claimed he "lost his voice" and cut Guns 'N Roses' set short.  

Fans rioted and caused $300,000 in damage. 

26 years ago - In 1992, the U.S. men's basketball Dream Team . . . Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird . . . won the gold medal at the Barcelona Summer Olympics

14 years ago - In 2004, Fay Wray, star of the original "King Kong", passed away.  She was 96. 

10 years ago - In 2008, the Summer Olympic Games opened in Beijing.

Kool Moe Dee is 56.  Rap legend who did the original "Wild Wild West"

Scott Stapp is 45.  Creed singer.  Biggest hit:  "With Arms Wide Open"

J.C. Chasez from 'N Sync is 42

Drew Lachey from 98 Degrees is 42.  He's the one who won the second season of "Dancing with the Stars"

Shawn Mendes is 20.  "Stitches" singer. 

Katie Leung is 31.  Cho Chang in the "Harry Potter" movies. 

Jackie Cruz is 32.  Marisol Gonzales on "Orange is the New Black"

Roger Federer is 37.  Dashing Swiss tennis star who's won eight Wimbledon trophies. 

Meagan Good is 37.  She's the star of Hulu's upcoming "Foxy Brown" TV series.  You'd know her from the "Minority Report"series, and Craig Robinson's sitcom "Mr. Robinson".  She was also in "You Got Served" and "Stomp the Yard"

Mark Wills is 45.  Country singer.  "Wish You Were Here" and "19 Somethin'" 

Rena Mero is 51.  She was Sable in the WWF until her ego got so big that Vince McMahon was forced to fire her.  Now she's basically just Mrs. Brock Lesnar

Deborah Norville is 60.  "Inside Edition" anchor. 

Donny Most is 65.  Ralph Malph on "Happy Days"

Larry Wilcox is 71.  Ponch's partner Jon Baker on "CHiPs"

Phil Balsley from The Statler Brothers is 79.  He's the dreamy baritone. 

Connie Stevens is 80.  '60s sex symbol. 

Dustin Hoffman is 81

Mel Tillis  (1932 - 2017)  Country legend.  His hits included "Send Me Down to Tucson" and "Coca Cola Cowboy"
