Hair Clippers Could Transmit Hepatitis C or AIDS

Now granted, this study was done in Africa where the Aids statistics are dramatically higher than the rest of the world but this should still make you aware of the potential risks involved with unsanitary hair clippers.

Researchers at the University of Cape Town found a significant amount of blood that contaminated hair clippers from local barbers. Exactly 42% of the clippers had blood found on them which could lead to the transmission of blood born viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis B.

We know that the standards here the United States are a lot higher for barbers getting licensed, going through schooling to be educated on the proper procedures to sterilize and clean all hair cutting equipment. The chances of something like this happening here may not seem very high, but it may be beneficial to at least talk to your barber the next time you get a hair cut and ask how they sterilize their equipment.

Also, in case you don't go to a barber and you let a friend cut your hair, definitely ask them or make sure they sterilize the clippers before they use them on you.
