LISTEN: St Pete to Ticket Jaywalkers, Including Protesters

ST. PETERSBURG -- Police are launching a pedestrian safety campaign whose targets include protesters who have blocked intersections, causing inconvenience to drivers and putting themselves at risk.

Chief Anthony Holloway says officers have been handing out flyers explaining that blocking an intersection, not using the sidewalk, and ignoring traffic lights are illegal and could result in a $62.50 fine. He says reaction from protest groups has been mixed so far.

The next step is enforcement, which the city plans to begin later this week.

Previously, the city had cordoned off intersections where protesters gathered.

Holloway says it's a response to incidents locally and nationwide, in which pedestrians have been seriously injured and even killed.
