An island just north of Tampa, with wild monkeys!

Have you heard about Monkey Island?! It is just a little north of Tampa Bay in Homosassa Springs, and you can Kayak to it, but DON'T screw with the monkeys! The island is protected and visitors are told to leave the monkeys alone.

Monkey Island was started in the mid-1900s after a doctor who captured some monkeys and decided to bring them here to America where they were actually used to help perfect the much needed polio vaccine. So, how did they end up north of Tampa on an island? It turns out the original group on monkeys were "monkeying around" at a local wildlife attraction and it was decided it was best for them to be relocated to an area where they couldn't get in too much trouble, this is how Monkey Island was formed!

The monkeys on monkey island hate swimming, so they have remained on the island!
