Last year, a story went viral about a homeless guy, Johnny, who used his last $20 to help a woman who ran out of gas. The woman and her husband, Kate and Mark, then wanted to help the man and out up a GoFundMe account to raise money to buy him a house. They ended up raising $400,000!!!
But it was all a scam.
Apparently Kate and Mark met Johnny about a month earlier, and then they met up with him a few times and gave him some money, that's when they all concocted the story. Apparently Kate and Mark were also hoping to land a book deal from it. Now they're all facing criminal charges of conspiracy and theft by deception.
Good news is if you donated the money to the scam, you'll get it back! GoFundMe says all 14,000 donors will be refunded in full.
