Lifted Trucks Are My Birthright

I once owned a 1979 GMC short bed step-side pickup truck with 10 inches of lift and 40-inch Gumbo Monster Mudder tires.

Now that's out of the way, let me tell you how I got there.

I was born and raised in Kentucky. Most of my family was made up of farmers and hard working country folk. They all drove pickups because they were needed on a day-to-day basis. They weren't typically lifted or modified, unless you consider a gun rack a customization.

I've owned LOTS of pickups over the years, but I used them for different reasons. I towed race cars and motorcycles here and there, hauled engines and transmissions and even used the 4x4 to get to work on many occasions.

Somewhere along the way, I decided that I'd always have a truck, preferably heavy duty and basic.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Back when I was in my late teens, I was trying like hell to get my first Corvette. I bought and sold dozens of cars and trucks in an attempt to wind up with my dream car. That's when I came across the beast I mentioned earlier.

It was owned by a young kid outside of Lexington, Kentucky. Luckily, the kid was in love with my bright blue 1980 Turbo Trans Am WS6. We drove each other's vehicles, then decided to trade immediately. He traded for love, I traded for profit potential.

I drove that behemoth everywhere. I broke driveshafts, u-joints and just about every other part you can imagine, BUT I FREAKING LOVED IT!

Eventually, I sold the truck to a local policeman. He kept it for years before getting a brand new one. I'll never forget the great times I had in that GMC. I jumped hills (and almost died doing it), drove through river beds and screamed through mud over and over again.

As I was driving to work today, I pulled up behind the beast in the picture. Looks like the body shop that owns it digs raising hell, too.

Cool, very cool.
