EAST LAKE-ORIENT PARK, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Hillsborough County firefighters say six people escaped an early morning house fire after a neighbor, who was also a relative, saw the flames and alerted the family to safety.

Firefighters say it happened around 12:30 on the 6500 block of E 25th Ave.

When crews arrived, they say the two-story home had heavy smoke and flames.

Two adults and four children were sleeping inside when the fire started, according to firefighters. The relative next door noticed the blaze, alerted his wife, and then both ran to the home to start knocking on doors and windows. Firefighters say because of the heroic actions of this couple, all six got out okay, but the man inside did have minor injuries and smoke inhalation during his escape and was taken to a local hospital in fair condition.

The home was destroyed by the fire since it has severe fire damage and the second floor collapsed after the residents escaped the home, firefighters said.

Firefighters say two family dogs died in the fire.

The cause is under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting.
