ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA) - St. Pete Police are beefing up patrols as they try to make the Pinellas Trail safer.

Officers and their police horses start the first of a series of planned mounted patrols of the trail Thursday.

The horses provide a platform for the officers to view long segments of the trail, the ability to respond to any potential problems quickly and still be able to interact with walkers, joggers and bicyclists.
