ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA) – St. Petersburg Police say a 66-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and arm after trying to help a woman when a man tried to snatch her purse.

Police say it happened just before 1:30 p.m. on the 3200 block of 33rd Avenue North.

The man was taken to a local hospital for wounds police say do not appear to be life-threatening.

Police say this all began when the victim and a 65-year-old woman had exited their home preparing to leave for a doctor's appointment. Police say they were then approached by the male suspect who was riding a bike, brought out a handgun and began pulling on the woman's purse while pistol whipping her in the head.

The male victim picked up a shovel to defend the woman when he was shot by the suspect, police say, and the suspect left and was last seen heading eastbound on 33rd Avenue North. Police say he did not take the woman's purse.

Police say the suspect is described as a b/m, 18-23 years of age, 5'10", 145 lbs, last seen a dark flannel shirt over a dark t-shirt, riding a turquoise colored beach cruiser type bike, which may have had fenders on it.
